Shopping with Tots

Naturally shopping isn't your kids' favorite pastime, but sometimes we have to take the kids with us during our shopping trips. To make shopping with tots less stressful for both you and them peruse the following strategies that will help make shopping with kids more fun.

1. Know Your Child' Limits.

Every time you shop with children, take their needs into account. Consider whether they are tired or hungry. Sometimes kids can be overexcited by the noise in the store, or simply need a gulp of fresh air and a bit of exercise, or maybe just a reassuring hug.

2. Consider Children's Curiosity.

Curiosity helps children learn about the world that surrounds them. That is why never reprimand the kid when he or she wants to examine a cute item. Instead, offer your kid to help hold the item safely, or if the item is fragile you may permit to look at it but not touch. Even if you don't plan to buy an item right away, you can share the child's enthusiasm and interest in it.

3. How to Shop with Infants.

Infants typically take shopping trips easier if they are not hungry and exhausted. Keep in mind that the dry air of shopping malls often makes babies and small children dehydrated, so consider having frequent nursing or juice breaks.

Babies like being carried and they feel much more comfortable and secure in a sling or carrier worn by the parent rather than on a stroller or grocery cart. A small kid's favorite toy will help a baby not to suffer too much from lessened attention from the parent, but do remember to stop from time to time to say some gentle words, have an eye contact, or just hug.

4. How to Shop with Toddlers.

Shopping with toddlers can turn into a real fun experience for both parents and the child if you involve the kid in making shopping decisions. For example, you may inquire which grapes look better. Also bringing along juice, a favorite snack, and a well-loved picture book might also help.

Small children often feel scared being surrounded by so many adults, especially when stores are busy. Consider using a backpack to bring toddlers up to a height where they will feel happier. And this way you are sure not to lose your child in a crowd.

5. How to Shop with Older Children.

An older child can be very helpful when doing grocery shopping, if this activity is associated with fun and is approached with appreciation. You may bring along clipped-out pictures of food from the newspaper grocery ads, and ask the kid to help find the item. If your child is mature enough to shop by himself he can find specific items alone, and then return from time to time to load products into the cart.

6. Skip the Crowds.

Avoid shopping just before dinner, when stores are overcrowded, and grownups and children are tired and hungry. To make shopping less stressful try hitting the stores in the morning or early afternoon on weekdays, or during the quiet early-evening time between 6 and 7 PM. When we manage to eliminate the stress of crowded stores and long check-out lines, there is more energy and creativity left to respond to our child's needs.

7. The Challenge of a Check-out Lane.

In most stores check-out lanes are densely packed with colorful gum and candy packages that temp to be purchased. These check-out lanes can become a real challenge for the tired and possibly hungry parent and a child. To keep stress and annoyance to minimum consider bringing a favorite healthful snack from home, like the oatmeal cookie and juice. If there are stores in your vicinity that have check-outs without candy consider shopping with kids there even though they can be can farther away.

8. How to Say "No".

Every time you have to saying "no" try to convey to the child that you understand his desires, even if you can't satisfy them all right away. You may say something like, "How cute it is! Let's take a good look and on coming home, we'll add it to your wish list." And don't forget about smiles and hugs that are actually free!

9. If You Reach Your Limit...

If you feel that you are about to lose your temper, try to set a positive example of handling anger and fatigue. You may say, "I'm afraid I'm losing my patience. Let's have a little break from shopping and go outside for a few minutes to get refreshed."

10. When Your Kids Reach their Limit.

In case none of the strategies mentioned above work, admit the fact that your kids have just reached their limits and respect that. And while shopping can wait an exhausted, overly-excited or hungry child cannot. Keep in mind that all children behave as well as they are treated. If a child regularly receives emotional support, undivided attention, patience, and understanding, he will be more patient during a shopping trip as well.
