Global Hotel Prices Rise for the Fifth Year in a Row

According to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price IndexTM (HPI) that Promotot.com has studies the average price charged for a hotel room around the world rose by 4% during the first half of 2014, when compared with the same period in 2013. Travel experts consider that the overall economic growth, particularly in Europe, influenced the increased travel spending.

During the first six month of 2014 the travel industry experienced strong demand for both international leisure and business travel, with the highest rate of increase in the HPI since early 2012. For the first time, Latin America and the Caribbean achieved record results over this period. In the current HPI the Caribbean had the rise of 6%, and Latin America had too, continuing the progress experienced in 2013.

Europe and Middle East as well as North America reported 5% Index growth. For Asia and the Pacific, the Index remained at the previous rate, but it should be noted that Asia continued to offer excellent value for travelers, while prices paid by inbound visitors to Australia were eased by the weaker Australian Dollar.

In addition to general economic recovery, there were three major reasons of the price changes. One factor that had a determining impact on hotel prices is currency fluctuations. UK travelers, for instance, benefitted the most because Sterling either remained stable against other weaker currencies or increased in value against others.

Another reason is the civil turmoil in a number of popular tourist markets. Over this period of time the number of visitors, and accordingly the prices, fell dramatically in Egypt and Turkey, which had a positive impact on Spanish tourism in particular. Finally, we should take into account the two great global sporting events of 2014 that took place in Sochi and Brazil, with prices naturally rising for the duration of the tournaments.
